

Wednesday, January 15, 1908, the 9 coeds held the first official bi-weekly meetings in Miner Hall. Informal sessions continued, with regular bi-weekly meetings beginning after the holiday. Hedgeman and Marie Woolfolk gave a presentation the administration to secure approval, which was granted immediately. The women returned to Howard in the Fall of 1907 to work on the creation of the sorority. To implement her idea, Hedgeman began recruiting interested classmates during the spring of 1907 and she and the ladies used the summer of 1907 to research and explore options for their new organization. Robinson, encouraged Hedgeman by relating her own observances of sorority life at the Women's College at Brown University. In the spring of 1907, Ethel Hedgeman led efforts to create a sisterhood at Howard University. The sorority is one of the nation's largest Greek-letter organizations, having more than 300,000 members in 1,024 chapters in the United States and several other countries. Alpha Kappa Alpha was incorporated on January 29, 1913. Forming a sorority broke barriers for African-American women in areas where they had little power or authority due to a lack of opportunities for minorities and women in the early 20th century. The sorority was founded on January 15, 1908, at the historically black Howard University in Washington, D.C., by a group of sixteen students led by Ethel Hedgeman Lyle. On behalf of the 500 plus members of the Omega Omega Chapter, I thank you for visiting our website. Since the inception of the Annual Day of Sharing, we have awarded over 1 million dollars to local high school students and community-based organizations. Omega Omega Chapter, in conjunction with The 1926 Foundation, Incorporated, annually awards scholarships to Philadelphia high school students and community grants to organizations whose mission aligns with our joint program initiatives. The Omega Omega Chapter’s signature event is the Annual Day of Sharing. Through our Connection Committee, the Omega Omega Chapter continues to advocate for social justice. The program targets emphasize supporting HBCU, assisting students with the college admissions process, women’s health and wellness, financial sustainability, the arts, and global initiatives.
